We Either Grow or Die
The first month of the year has passed. That was fast. Many of us are working on new year resolutions, new goals, old ones. Many require change. Maybe a new skillset or habit.
We either grow or die. Why do we make resolutions and goals? What do we want to change? What do we need to do or learn, to grow, to make that come to fruition?
As I jump back into the talent space, it reminds me how important our education, our skills, our yearning for learning plays a role in our work and everything we do. One of the principles in my coach training resonated with me. We either grow or die. To make change, to move forward, to become a master of anything we need to nurture, feed, water, grow. We are like a perennial in a flower bed.
Many of my clients I coach are looking to change their career or job. In the talent space, organizations are looking for quality, specific skillsets, innovation, creativity.
I found this great blog on LI about future skills. What are you doing to help you grow? What will help you land that dream job? What gifts can you share with others?
Now is the time to explore you, what do you really want? Do you want to grow or die? Maybe you are looking for a new career. Maybe take on a new hobby. Maybe change an old habit. Or maybe it is a relationship that is not working or missing completely.
What do you desire? What do you want to manifest?
Take your journal or a notepad and some quiet space and do this exercise:
1. List the attributes of your ultimate job, hobby, habit, relationship. Think about your attitude, your values, your behaviors, your skills, resources, anything else you may need.
2. On a scale of 1 to 10 (highest), rate your attribute against your current state.
3. List all the items you want to improve. What new skills do you need?
4. Start writing a plan for change. Are there any attitudes, beliefs, skills, resources, tasks that need attention, weeding, pruning, improvement, or overhaul? Think about your situation, people around you, your beliefs. Anything limiting you in any way?
5. Create a plan. For each item you need to work on, create a strategy for improvement, developing and learning. Set a start date and end date. How will you measure success? Be realistic, share your goals with a trusted partner and ask them to keep you accountable.
6. Review your plan weekly. Make adjustments as needed.
Are you challenged with creating a plan, staying motivated? Maybe you are not sure what you desire? Yet, something is missing, and you are just not there. If the time is now, the desire to grow and change is now, and you are stuck, reach out to me for a complimentary coaching session to see if timing and fit can help you begin.
P.S. Remember working a plan is a work in progress and progress changes over time. Trust you are right where you need to be. Look at any obstacle as a small pivot and opportunity to grow and learn. The process of learning and mastery occurs with time and transitions. Enjoy the experience. Smell the flowers. Be present.
